Via a Facebook post, Dr Stella Nyanzi has confirmed that she is Kenya despite the allegations that government did not welcome her. She has come out and said that;
Yesterday, I went to Uhuru Park in Nairobi city. Uhuru means independence, freedom, liberty. I stood at the famous Freedom Corner were non-violent protestors have held or started peaceful demonstrations over the years.
I took a picture in honor of Wangari Maathai, the amazing woman leader and Nobel laureate who led the Green Belt Movement. I celebrated her because her nude protest against president Moi inspired and informed my own nude protest at Makerere University.
I also took pictures at Dedan Kimathi’s historical monument to the victims of colonial oppression. He was the leader of the national liberation movement called the Mau Mau. I stood in awe of this mighty African freedom fighter who organized communities of freedom fighters.
If our ancestors freed themselves from oppressive colonizers and fought for rights against corrupt post-colonial presidents, surely we can tap into this history and free ourselves from present-day dictators. May the spirit of Wangari Maathai and Dedan Kimathi infuse me with the commitment to continue fighting for freedom and liberation in Uganda!
